"The Spanish–American War (April 21 – December 10, 1898) was fought between Spain and the United States in 1898. It began with the sinking of the USS Maine in Havana Harbor in Cuba, and resulted in the U.S. acquisitions of Puerto Rico, Guam, and the Philippines, and its domination of Cuba. It represented U.S. intervention in the Cuban War of Independence and Philippine Revolution, with the latter later leading to the Philippine–American War.

The Puerto Rico Statehood, Independence, or Free Association Referendum is on the ballot in Puerto Rico as a legislatively referred statute on November 5, 2024. 

The ballot measure asks voters to choose one of three options:

1. A vote for statehood supports the admission of Puerto Rico as the 51st state of the United States of America. 

2. A vote for independence supported becoming an independent sovereign nation. 

3. A vote for sovereignty in free association with the United States supported making Puerto Rico a sovereign nation outside the Territory Clause of the U.S. Constitution and entering into Articles of Free Association with the United States and delegating certain powers and responsibilities to the United States.
